How does Automatic Bridging choose the NIC?

I want to know how Workstation 7.1.6 decides what NIC to use.

But the documentation for Workstation's Automatic Bridging is very vague

It says On host systems with more than one physical Ethernet adapter installed, the choice of which adapter Workstation uses is arbitrary.

If I've got 2 NICs (A and B). If A is enabled and B is disabled, then will it choose A?

How arbitrary is arbitrary?

Will VMWare be able to change what NIC is bridged if the active NIC becomes disabled and the other NIC becomes enabled while the VM is running?
