Convert vCenter Server to VM??

We recently purchased and installed vCenter 5.1 and vSphere 5.1.  At the time from what I had read vCenter should not be a VM.  Since installation and configuration I attended vMware training on 5.1 and we were told that vCenter is fully supported as a VM.

So - does vCenter function well as a VM?  If so, can I convert the iron box to a VM?  If so, how?
