Attached is another log. Changing the resolution from within the guest (using its monitor settings app) appeared to work fine. It was nearly instantaneous and gave no error messages. Maybe the problem is within VMWare's guest auto-fit feature?
EDIT: The new resolution is remembered when it is set within the guest. 
EDIT: After updating Ubuntu, I can change the resolution by resizing the VM window but the new resolution is not saved.
