Found out how to force a reinstall:
- Close VMWare Player.
- Start -> regedit on the host and search for tools-linux
- Look for a key nearby named ModifyPath and copy its value to the clipboard.
- Start -> Command Prompt using Run as Administrator...
- Paste the value from the clipboard and hit enter to run the uninstaller.
- Open VMWare Player and create a new linux VM.
- The player will offer to reinstall the tools-linux component.
But it fixed nothing.
