why is VDR unable to mount a USB hard drive that has been shared on the network?

We are trying to create two shares that can be used to backup/restore VMs from.  We are able to mount a local drive on a client laptop that is shared on the network, but fail to mount a shared USB drive connected to that same client laptop?  I know we have done this before but for some reason we can't get it to work now.  We were using the previous version of VDR but now we are using the 2.0 version.  We also tried running the orginal version and mounting the drive but it also doesn't work anymore.  The permissions on the share are open to vmware admin.  Are we missing something?

running VMware Data Recovery Appliance 2.0.1.2374
