Oops!
No harm done. Thanks for helping me think this through...
Host info. Wifi only connection.
Vmware network info.
Guest network info:
Result in guest with NAT. Success!:
Now... Same host connection... Same Virt Net Editor config.... Guest network connection set to Bridged.
In WinXP guest, ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew.... FAIL...
If the VM's Network Adapter is set to NAT and the Host is only connected to the Office LAN via WiFi can the Guest OS access the Internet, assuming the Host has Internet Connectivity?
The answer to this is then Yes.
(Cool! You taught me something new. Thanks!)
Now further question...
If the answer to this is yes yet no when the VM is Bridged then the WiFi Router is not allowing multiple IP Addresses to be assigned to the same MAC Address
Host MAC = 38:59:F9:98:50:00
Guest MAC = 00:0C:29:49:03:5B
(see screenshots above)
Specific network hardware is a Linksys WAP54 access point and then a Linksys / Cisco RVL200 router.
and in some cases once the WiFi Router sees the MAC Address of the Host's WiFi NIC then it doesn't allow additional IP Address to be assigned even though the Guest is bridged directly.
OK, so this is where the host isn't quite "transparent"? I can see your reasoning, but I wouldn't have guessed that the host gets in the way. Isn't the guest making the DHCP request directly to the router? (I think that is called ARP...) My understanding is the guest pc wakes up on the network and says, "hello out there, im 00:0C:29:49:03:5B, can you please give me an IP address and gateway information?" To which the router then responds appropriately.
Apparently the host does somehow get in the way?
The oddity of the situation is that none of the network hardware (AP / router) has been altered in a year or more. I've been working with it daily since first install of Workstation 8 nearly a year ago.
Again thanks, if you can shed any further light on the subject, I'm grateful.
