Thanks very much, that helped me find the answer. 
I installed Management Studio and tried to connect. It was unsuccessful, but the more verbose error message led me to the answer.
It turns out the instance of SQL wasn't listening on TCP/IP. (Something I didn't know could even be disabled.) Once I had enabled it and the server was listening on 1433, the rest of the installation continued.
